Married in Mount Airy - 86%

Nicole Dollanganger taps into an interesting place this year, striking a line in the sand and sticking to her guns making music that is among the most delicate ever created. She finds many ways to be delicate: old fashioned songwriting on “Nymph Finding the Head of Orpheus”, soul searching on “Dagwood”, epic distortion on “Running Free”, folk stylings on “Gold Satin Dreamer”. She is on Grimes’s label which should be no surprise since her vocals are so close to hers, but the real surprise is the way the music looks back to rock music history in general.

The tremors and pains of Lisa Germano are displayed in the whispers of “Whispering Glades“, and the passion of a young Joni Mitchell happen to her generation all over again on “Married In Mount Airy”. The album cover, all black make-up wearing a wedding dress paints a perfect image of what this music sounds like. Matthew Tomasi produces with an overall echoey ambiance with subtle changes that keep each song just a little bit different. It is as hard to find a songwriter this outstanding among the trends of indie rock today, and Dollanganger is a diamond in the rough hopefully not to far in to be discovered. I really do want to give her all the exposure she can! Her music is worthy of any of the artists of our time.
